Door hinges

GU door hinges for project, main and secondary entrance doors

Door hinges (pivots, hinges) connect the door to the door frame or frame and facilitate the swing motion of the door.

Since the 1950s drill-in hinges have become more and more established and are used instead of hinges with mortise, route-in or screw-on plates. Replacing the former mortise-wing plate with round positioning pins for drilling in was a ground-breaking development as the positioning pins can be industrially fabricated and allow the door to be installed in a much more rational cost-effective manner.

Door hinges normally consist of three elements: the lower hinge part which is fastened to the door frame or frame, the top hinge part which is fastened to the door leaf and the pin which represents the rotation axis.

Many versions of two and three-part drill-in hinges are available for room doors. Many more versions are required for project doors to accommodate the frame profiles, material, load-bearing capacity and loads at each door, for which suitable hinges are required. The various door profiles require suitable hinge parts.

The demand for concealed door hinges is high. This is because these hinges are not visible on unrebated doors when they are closed.

Door hinges are exposed to high axial and radial loads. The hinge plates must also be able to absorb the dynamic forces arising as a result of impacts or mishandling of the door leaf. The hinge mounts must be adapted to the various materials of a door frame. They are screwed to or recessed in timber frames, and are welded onto steel door frames. Hinge mounts that can be adjusted in three dimensions and allow the door leaf to be aligned following installation are normally used.

Adjustment in all directions whenever possible is a virtually indispensable requirement for door hinges, as this means doors can also be made easy to use once again after years of heavy use.

Project hinges for doors in escape and rescue routes

The purpose of escape and rescue routes is to protect and save people. The stringent requirements in relation to functionality and safety require a permanent rotatable connection between door frame and door leaf. Gretsch-Unitas complements the intelligent combination of mechanics and electronics of the locks and door hardware for emergency exit and panic doors with innovative hinge technology – from concealed hinges through to barrel hinge solutions in a range of finishes – for use on elements made of timber, PVC, and metal. Perfectly compatible components from one source guarantee utmost security.

Certification and security

Safety is not only the first priority at escape doors. GU hinges meet the high requirements up to resistance class RC 3 in different system tests to EN 1627–1630.
