Municipal Library, Stuttgart

The city library in Stuttgart looks like a cubic crystal. Its uniform exterior shell made of modular squares consist of translucent glass blocks set in exposed concrete frames – behind that there is a glazed inner skin. The geometrical, clear form of the monolithic cube can be entered from all four sides. The centre of the building, designed by the South Korean architect Eun Young Yi, provides an exceptional spacial impression: A four-storey, completely empty room, whose monochrome white walls are illuminated by a square skylight. A multi-storey gallery opens out over the centre with its palpably dramatic dimensions turning studying and reading into a really memorable experience. At dusk the new "temple of books" turns into a blue shimmering cube.
