It opened in 1979 under the name Hotel Beograd InterContinental. InterContinental was one of the first Western hotel chains in the Yugoslavian market at a time when tourism from Western countries was just starting to boom.
In 2012 the hotel was closed to undergo thorough renovation. Not only was the interior redesigned, the extensive glass facade was also renewed. The 30 year old glass panels were replaced by a glass facade with significantly improved energetic characteristics. Due to the fact that the building is heritage-protected, the triple glass panels were designed to match the old ones in colour and shape. The hotel's solemn reopening as Crowne Plaza, one of the brands of the InterContinental Group, was in January 2014.
