Stadtbibliothek Stuttgart

The Stuttgart City Library presents itself like a cubic crystal. Its uniform outer shell of modular squares consists of translucent glass blocks framed by exposed concrete frames - behind which a glass inner skin is attached. The geometrically clear form of the monolithic cube can be entered from all four sides. In the centre of the house, designed by the South Korean architect Eun Young Yi, there is a special spatial impression: a four-storey, completely empty hall whose monochrome white walls are illuminated by a square skylight. Above this centre, a multi-storey gallery is being developed which, with its perceptible spatial drama, turns studying and reading into a real experience. At dusk, the new "Book Temple" is transformed into a bluish shimmering cube.
