South Quay Plaza
South Quay Plaza plays a major role in the revitalisation of the historic docks around Canary Wharf. The mixed-use property is made up of two buildings, one tall residential tower block in Canary Wharf and a smaller residential unit in the south, which fits in with the streetscape of Marsh Wall with retail units and a new, large public square. Before the upgrades, the land was inhospitable and very built-up; it also formed a visual and physical barrier between Canary Wharf and the areas to the south of Marsh Wall.
The project’s vision was to develop and redesign the neighbourhood by opening 60% of the area up for public use: including 1.5 hectares of open, public space with footpaths that connect the residential areas of Millwall and Cubitt Town with Canary Wharf.
The towers were designed to improve the visual connection and public access to the docks, while also maximising views and daylight for the buildings. Together with the new landscaped areas, this opens up and celebrates the riverside walkways and creates a new reinvigorated, thriving space to be used by both workers and residents. The sustainable residential towers provide the area with urgently needed living space in close proximity to public transport, outdoor space and the thriving Canary Wharf scene.
The towers also feature retail units on the ground floor and a number of appealing features, including a twin pool, gym and spa, plus community spaces and playgrounds. The 56th floor also has a resident’s lounge and a garden containing London’s highest bar, which boasts unique views of the docks and city beyond.
